Day 11

Updated: May 5, 2022

Imagine waking up to this….

The ride into Glencoe is still the best day on the bike for all of us. But there are still three days to go. Today we’re headed for Inverness. The capital city of the Scottish Highlands and where the River Ness meets the Moray Firth. First, the small matter of 86 miles to deal with. No food at our hostel so 14 miles to Fort William for breakfast at the Kilted Camel Cafe. Hi Mark!

The rest of the ride starts gently enough. Miles and miles of gently undulating, quiet roads, no wider than an average driveway. And lots and lots of lochs.

This day gives us a bit of everything though. Next up, forest trails made up of broken rubble and flints. Some tough climbs too. Hi Gaz!

The brutal surface soon takes its first victim…

The Tickle Monster punctures not once, but twice. And then, a first major mechanical for the Beast. A snapped rear mech cable. Ouch! He doesn’t look happy does he?

He knows what’s in store. 40

miles on two gears. It doesn’t look pretty…but it’s enough to get to civilisation.

Riding the middle sprocket on a 50/34. For the Tickle Monster, it’s a ride over the tops on the east shore of the loch. Gaz, the ultimate domestique, stays with the Boss who faces either a spinning class on speed or a Graeme Obree-style, chain-snapping leg breaker. It’s a bit of both along the banks of Loch Ness. But there’s only one monster on this lake…and he tows Gaz all the way to finish line….
